This is how my Nan was banned from Church
ihmhl: hmwt: shutupmerlin: My sweet, elderly nan was banned from the Catholic church because she interrupted a sermon and told the entire congregation to go to Hell after they shunned my Uncle for coming out. She also called the Father (or whatever) a cock sucker, and said she was proud her son was one. (Ha!)  So yes, my nan is a total BAMF and there should be more people like her...

http://gretachristina.typepad.com/greta_christinas_weblog/2007/10/atheists-and-an.html A pretty comprehensive list of why atheists are angry.  I didn’t even realize that these things annoyed me until I read some of them, but they’re mostly right.

Being Crazy is Noisy
John Sterns is diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder (a co-diagnosis of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder), chronic depression and chronic anxiety. He describes a lifetime of fighting demons … Special to MORE INTELLIGENT LIFE I.  I hear voices (“auditory hallucinations”, technically). They come from all directions and fill my mind with hateful, self-destructive demands. One comes from...

The Neocortex
The last and most advanced brain to evolve to date is called the Neocortex, neomammalian or rational brain. We share this part of our brain with other higher level mammals like the primates and dolphins, although in humans the neocortex is the largest. It takes up 2/3’s of the human brain. This is where we find the brain power to develop language, abstract thought, conciousness and...

The Hindbrain
Having evolved hundreds of millions of years ago, the Hindbrain or the Reptillian Brain is the oldest part of the human brain. As you might guess from it’s name, it’s a piece of brain anatomy that we share with reptiles and is the most primitive. Likewise it’s in charge of our primal instincts and most basic functions. Things like the instincts of survival, dominance, mating...

Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?
Douglas Adams: Forty-two. Mohammed Aldouri (Iraqi ambassador): The chicken did not cross the road. This is a complete fabrication. We don’t even have a chicken. Aristotle: To actualize its potential. Buddha: If you ask this question, you deny your own chicken-nature. George W. Bush: We don’t really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on...

Abortion Sense and Nonsense
First the pro-life nonsense. I think it’s nonsense to think personhood begins at conception. A 5-day old embryo composed out of undifferentiated, pluripotent cells is not a complete person like you and me. A 2-month-old fetus, even with its complete set of rudimentary organs, is not a complete person like you and me. Now for the pro-choice nonsense. A commenter here said recently that aborting a...

The Coffee Cup Analogy
A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university lecturer. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the lecturer went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups: porcelain, plastic, glass, some plain-looking and some expensive and exquisite, telling...
